Arman Sayat (born 1995) is a Kazakh-American filmmaker, cinematographer, and director based in Los Angeles. He is best known for his films Mr. Nightmare (2024) and Angry Lily (2025), and for founding the Cine Choice Awards and the streaming platform Sceneum.
Early life and education
Sayat was born in Kazakhstan in 1995. He later moved to the United States to pursue filmmaking. He earned his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Filmmaking from the New York Film Academy, where he trained on professional sets such as Universal Studios.[1]
Career
Sayat’s films are known for their emotional depth, poetic imagery, and social relevance. His 2024 psychological thriller Mr. Nightmare garnered attention on the independent festival circuit. In 2025, he released Angry Lily, a short film addressing themes of domestic violence and resilience.[2]
His previous work, On the Other Side of the Road (2023), examined grief and generational trauma. In addition to directing and writing, Sayat is a skilled cinematographer and editor, often taking on multiple roles in his productions.[3]
Contributions to Film Community
Sayat founded the Cine Choice Awards, a Los Angeles-based film festival dedicated to spotlighting emerging voices in independent cinema. He also co-founded Sceneum, a digital platform that helps independent filmmakers distribute their films, find audiences, and connect with investors worldwide.[4]
Personal life
Sayat currently resides in Los Angeles with his spouse and children. He continues to work internationally while fostering cultural exchange between Central Asia and the U.S.
