Arafat Ashwad Islam (Bengali: আরাফাত আশওয়াদ ইসলাম) was born in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on November 15, 1984. He is a businessman, politician, and philanthropist. Arafat is the managing director of Acorp Limited, which owns the Orkin franchise in Bangladesh.[1] He is also an elected member of the executive committee of the Gulshan Society[2] and sits on the governing board of the Anu Memorial Foundation. Additionally, Arafat is a member of the Awami League, the oldest political party in Bangladesh.

Early life and family

Arafat was born on November 15, 1984, in the Lalmatia suburb of Dhaka, to A J M Enamul Islam, a businessman and secretary general of the Commonwealth Society of Bangladesh, and Fatima Zohra Islam, a retired schoolteacher. He is the nephew of politician and bureaucrat A M Nurul Islam. He served as the private secretary to the former prime minister and father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the former president of the U.S. chapter of Awami League.

Education and business career

Arafat holds a B.Sc. in Economics and is a shareholder and managing director of Acorp Limited, a Bangladeshi-based commodity trading, consultancy, and commercial services company.[3] He represents the company in various trade and commerce professional bodies, including the AmCham in Bangladesh, the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the Bangladesh Indenting Agents’ Association.[4]

Philanthropy

Arafat is also actively involved with a number of philanthropic organisations. He is a member of the Gulshan Society executive committee for the 2022-2024 term, elected as the Convenor for Zone-6.[5] He sits on the Cultural[6] and Lake Management and Environment subcommittees of the Gulshan Society.[7] Furthermore, he is a founding member and secretary of the governing board of the Anu Memorial Foundation, a nonprofit organisation that focuses on education, the environment, and digital innovation.[8] The foundation was established to honour the legacy of his uncle, A M Nurul Islam (Anu).[9]

Political career

In 2019, Arafat joined Bangladesh Awami League by joining its Gulshan Thana unit.[10] In 2023, he made an unsuccessful attempt to be the Awami League’s candidate for the Dhaka-17 by-election following the death of the member of parliament Akbar Hossain Pathan.[11]

Publications

Arafat has authored a research thesis paper titled "Transition from Autocracy to Democracy: How it Affected Bangladesh's Economy?" for his bachelor's degree in economics. The research was published in the International Journal for Multidisciplinary Research.[12] He has also written several op-eds in prominent publications like The Daily Star and New Age about contemporary socioeconomic and political issues, including many promoting the ideals of the Bangladesh Awami League.[13]
