Antonio Nieto-Rodriguez is a spanish global expert in the field of project management, known for his achievements and major advancement of the profession. He is the former Chairman of the Project Management Institute and author of the Harvard Business Review Project Management Handbook.[1]

His experience includes leading strategic initiatives and transformational change in PricewaterhouseCoopers, Fortis, and BNP Paribas. He is the founder of the Strategy Implementation Institute [2]. and the Brightline Initiative [3]. Currently, he serves as the Sustainability Transformation Program Director at GlaxoSmithKline Vaccines.

He has been teaching modern project management to MBAs and executives over the past 15 years at Instituto de Empresa, Solvay Business School[4], Vlerick Business School[5], Skólkovo[6], Duke Corporate Education[7], and Hult Business School[8]

Early life and education

Nieto-Rodriguez has a degree in Economics and International Development from Universidad Complutense. He holds an MBA from London Business School, Insead's International Directors Program (IDP-C), and is Project Management Professional (PMP) and Strategy Implementation Professional certified.

He is fluent in five languages and has received his education in Germany, Mexico, Italy, and the United States.

Career

Nieto-Rodriguez started his career in 1995 at Unisys in Amsterdam as a Business Analyst, overseeing the implementation of a European Shared Services Centre and facilitating the achievement of ISO 9002 certification.

From 1997 to 2007, he worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers Advisory in Brussels as a Senior Manager, responsible for delivering projects and change initiatives for multiple clients.

Nieto-Rodriguez worked at BNP Paribas Fortis in Brussels/Amsterdam between 2007 and 2010 as the Head of Post-Merger Integration, participating in the ABN AMRO separation and integration, the largest merger in the Financial Services industry. Between 2010 and 2015 he was the Head of Transversal Portfolio Management, responsible for implementing a company-wide project investment selection process and introducing agile practices.

In 2015 he joined GlaxoSmithKline in Brussels, holding various roles, including Director of the Vaccines Global Project Management Center of Excellence (2015-2019), Program Director within the Vaccines Industrial Strategy group (2019-2020), and Program Director in GSK Sustainability Transformation (since January 2021).

Nieto-Rodriguez has been an active volunteer for more than ten years at the Project Management Institute (PMI). From 2012 to 2018 he was a director at the global board. In 2016, he assumed the role of global Chairman.

Awards

Nieto-Rodriguez received the Ideas into Practice award from Thinkers50 in 2017[9] for his innovative ideas and practical insights in project management.

In 2021 he received the PMI Fellow [10], recognizing individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the project management profession.

Major Contributions

Nieto-Rodriguez has authored multiple books, including: Harvard Business Review Project Management Handbook [11] (Harvard Business Press, 2021), Strategy Implementation Playbook: A Step-By-Step Guide (co-authored with Robin Speculand, 2022), Lead Successful Projects (Penguin Business Series, 2019), The Project Revolution[12] (LID, 2019) and The Focused Organization [13] (Gower / Routledge, 2012).

He has delivered keynotes at more than 500 conferences and events worldwide, including European Business Summit, Global Peter Drucker Forum, Presidents Summit, Strategy Leaders Forum, Gartner Summit, TEDx, and EU Cohesion Policy Conference.

Nieto-Rodriguez is part of Marshall Goldsmith 100 coaches and has served as a mentor and coach to senior executives, sharing the art and science of strategy execution and project management. His guidance has empowered leaders to drive positive change within their organizations and achieve sustainable success.
