Anton Leeland Crone is a journalist and photographer based in Cape Town, South Africa. He is editor of leading South African travel magazine, Getaway.[1]

Life and Work

Crone was born on 12 November 1971 in Harare, Zimbabwe. His family emigrated to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 1981 where he graduated from Stanger High School in 1988. Crone studied at Natal Tecknikon in Durban, where he graduated with a Degree in Graphic Design (Cum Laude) in 1993. Relocating to Johannesburg he became an art director at prominent advertising agency, TBWA Hunt Lascaris. In 2000 Crone moved to New York, USA to take up a role as art director at Ogilvy. He became creative director of Ogilvy in Oslo, Norway in 2003[2], and returned to South Africa in 2006 where he worked for Ogilvy and then Saatchi & Saatchi [3] until 2010 as head of art and Creative director respectively. During his advertising career Crone won a variety of international awards for design and art direction, including D&AD[4], One Show[5][6]and Cannes Lions. He left the advertising industry in 2010 to pursue a career as a photographer and travel writer.

His first photographic exhibition in 2016 highlighted the diverse working class community of Woodstock, Cape Town.[7]

Before taking the editor role at Getaway in 2020, Crone was editor and CEO of wildlife travel website, Safarious[8], and before that editor in chief of Africa Geographic. He has written for various local and international publications including Sunday Times[9][10] and Wall Street Journal[11], primarily on the subjects of travel, humanitarian issues and conservation.

Crone has judged on award panels for the advertising and travel industries[12] and has spoken at TEDx[13], World Travel Market, and Getaway Bloggers Conference.
