Anthony Abraham Thomas also known as Tony Thomas is a Global Chief Information Officer (CIO), Senior Advisor at Boston Consulting Group since June 2020. Previously he was the CIO at Nissan Motor Corporation Limited since October 2017.[1] There he was looking after the management of all information systems, Cyber Security, Data and Analytics, information technology for various Nissan brands, Datsun & Infiniti. As the CIO, Tony worked with Alliance partners Renault and Mitsubishi to drive synergies and efficiencies. He was leading Nissan’s Global Digital Transformation, Digital Skills Enhancement and Driving Information Technology, systems, data management and security for the future. Before this he was working with GE as their global CIO. He also held the additional role as Chief Information Officer for GE South Asia, He Served as a member of GE Global IT Council and GE India Leadership Council.
Before that, from April 2012 to September 2015, he served Vodafone as a chief information officer, where he managed information technology across all businesses.
Early life and education
Tony was born in Mutholy, Pala in Kerala, India to Thomas and Saramma. They both are teachers, who belong to Parinthirickal, an ancient Syrian Catholic family. Tony is the elder of the two sons. His brother Gibu Thomas is the President of Estée Lauder.
Tony completed his early schooling from India. In 1980 he joined his parents in Nigeria and completed the rest of his schooling at NKST Bristow Secondary School. He completed his General Certificate of Education O’ Level and A’ Level with University of London. Later in 1987, Tony returned to India to complete his pre-degree along with B. Tech (Bachelor of Technology) in Electrical & Electronics Engineering in 1991 from University of Kerala. In 2019, he was certified as a Doctor of Science by Hindustan Institute of Science and Technology.
Career
Tony has worked progressively into various Information Technological industries since 1991. He was a Team Leader at Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi, along with Dun and Bradstreet/Satyam Software. Since 1997, he has been the Senior Manager at Ernst and Young LLP for 6 years. Later in April 2005, he joined Citi Global Banking Operations as a Senior Vice President.
After being at CitiBank for 7 years, Tony stepped into a new position at Vodafone in April 2012, as a Chief Information Officer (CIO), managing Vodafone India. In September 2015, he joined General Electric, as a Chief Information Officer (CIO), overlooking the management of Digital & Information Technology for all businesses in every region outside USA. Later in October 2017, Tony was a Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Nissan Motor Corporation Ltd. and left in March 2020. As of June 2020, Tony is the Senior Advisor for Boston Consulting Group.
Apart from his extensive work in industries, Tony is presently as an Executive Mentor in Columbia University, New York for a master’s program in Technology Management. Along with being associated with Kerala State Government, he is a Founding Member, a mentor and an Angel Investor at CIO Angel Network. Previously, Tony was a core member of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in their Technical Committee in the Mobile Banking Department. Along with this, he was a core member of CII National Committee IT, ITeS and E-commerce for Confederation of Indian Industry. In 2017, he was a core member of ASSOCHAM National Council (The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) on IT/ IteS.
In addition to this, Tony is an investor along with being an independent advisor and a mentor to various start-ups including Carestack, Aisle, BuildNext, Swapp and Loyaak. He is also an advisor to multiple corporations and Governments on Digital Transformation, Start-up and Innovation.
Personal life
Tony is married to Neetu Thomas. She holds an MBA and works in Drug Research Regulatory, presently on sabbatical. The couple has two children, Michael and Maria. They lived in New Jersey, USA until 2012 and moved back to India in 2020. Presently, they reside in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.
