Annick T.R. Wibben is currently a professor at the Swedish Defense University (SEDU) in Stockholm, Sweden.[1]

Early Life and Education

Annick Wibben grew up in Hamburg, Germany, but has lived in many places including Finland, the United States, and Sweden. She studied for a bachelors degree of economics at the University of Hamburg and then moved to Finland to study for a masters in International Relations and European Studies at the University of Tampere. Finally she received a Ph.D. for International Politics at the University of Wales/Aberystwyth, UK.[1]

Career

In 2019, Professor Wibben was appointed as the inaugural Anna Lindh professor for gender, peace and security at the Swedish Defense University.[2] Previously, from 2005-2019, she worked at the University of San Francisco (USF), USA, as a professor of Political Science and International Relations. Prior to that she worked with the Information Technology, War and Peace Project [3] at the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University, USA, and had visiting positions at Bryant University and Wellesley College.

Her research specializes in critical security and military studies, feminist peace research, international theory, and feminist international relations. Rather than considering it a subfield of security studies she argues that "feminist aims and the scope of their concerns explode it confines at every possible turn. Feminist security scholars have a long and proud tradition of feminist writing on issues of peace, violence, and war [...] challenging the limits of existing security narratives, both content and form, they revise the politics and meaning of security as we know them" (Wibben 2011:113-114).[4]

Wibben is also interest in questions of methodology, representation, and writing. In 2016, she published an edited volume Researching War: Feminist Methods, Ethics & Politics, which addresses these issues in relation to the study of war.

In addition to several books, including Teaching Peace and War: Pedagogy and Curricula (edited with Amanda Donahoe), she has published numerous articles and frequently contributes to blogs and media.[5]
