Anna Mireille Abitbol (1908-1995) was an impressionist painter born in Algeria. She was one of the first Jewish Algerian women to attend the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. During her short time there, cut short by World War II, her painting, “Nature Morte aux Eventails” (Still life with Fans), was selected to be presented at Salon d’Automne’ which exhibits the works of young artists every fall in Paris since 1903. She was the youngest presenter. Due to anti-Jewish sentiment during the late 1930s when Abitbol attended the École in Paris, she signs many of her paintings using the last name "Duparc" instead of her real last name.
Before moving to Paris, Abitbol began studying painting at the Fine Arts School in Oran and, in 1930, at the age of 22, she won first prize in the “Centennial of Algeria” competition for her watercolor “Flowers in a Chinese Vase.”
During the 1940s and 50s, after leaving Europe to move to Morocco where her family lived, she taught French in a private school, worked at various odd jobs, and eventually became a sales representative for a large pharmaceutical company. She also continued to paint and exhibited regularly at the Lorenzo Quarello Gallery in Casablanca.
In 1991 Abitbol exhibited at the ‘Seniors’ Art Expo’ in Santa Monica, where she received warm accolades.
Mireille died in 1995 at age 87, and on December 8, 2006 - coincidentally on the 11th anniversary of her death - her daughter Danielle curated an exhibit of the works still in her collection, together with family mementoes, and an historical photo montage of Mireille’s childhood in Algeria, together with photos in France and Morocco, at the Sephardic Temple in Los Angeles.>
