Animal Company is a free-to-play social multiplayer virtual-reality game on the Meta Quest platform developed by Wooster Games.[1] The game takes the arm-flailing locomotive mechanics of Gorilla Tag, mashes it with the co-op tension of Lethal Company.[1] The game has hit #1 Top-Selling on the Meta Quest store[2] and has remained a constant Top 10 title on the Meta Quest charts.
Gameplay
In Animal Company, players navigate a series of themed environments, including sewers, forests, and caves, using a physics-based "arm-swiping" locomotion system similar of to Gorilla Tag. The core loop focuses on cooperative survival, where players must work together to scavenge rare loot and survive and combat monsters that each have their own special way of attacking.
The game supports both public and private lobbies, facilitating social interaction as a primary mechanic.[1]
A central hub, known as the lab, allows for character customization. Players can select from various animal forms and equip cosmetic items, some of which are released through a weekly update cadence or as limited-time bundles.
Development
The development team has stated that Animal Company began as a six-week prototype before expanding into a full release. According to the developers, the game's design was influenced by observed behaviors within younger VR player communities, with a focus on repeatable social interaction. They noted that considerations around how easily gameplay moments could be shared through short-form video influenced early design decisions.[3]
Monetization was delayed until product-market fit was achieved: for example, the team reports waiting three months after Early Access to launch paid content.[3]
The studio has also reported adopting a community-oriented development model, relying on player feedback, in-game events, and user-generated content rather than traditional marketing. A significant portion of the game's visibility came from organic activity on platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and Discord. Monetization features were introduced several months after launch and adjusted over time based on patterns of player engagement and usage.[3]
Reception
UploadVR wrote that by mid-2025, Animal Company was ranked as the "5th highest grossing game for first year revenue on Quest, reaching 500k daily and 1 million active monthly players."[4]
