Early Life

Anifa Mvuemba, an African (Congolese descent) American fashion designer, was born on November 16, 1990. When she was barely three years old, her family relocated from Kenya to the United States.[1] She enrolled in a fashion design class during her junior year of high school, and once she finished, she started working in retail at Nordstrom. She enrolled in Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland after high school to study fashion merchandising, but she eventually dropped out because the program didn't emphasize design.[2] She is well recognized for founding the women's clothing line, Hanifa.

Career

Mvuemba founded and designed the ready-to-wear womenswear brand Hanifa in 2012. The Congolese designer, who has been featured in Forbes, British Vogue, Billboard, and Elle, has established her direct-to-consumer business completely through social media. The label held a "never seen before" 3-D fashion display for its Pink Label Congo line, which depicts the essence of the inequities within African culture through design, on Instagram live in May 2020. Each outfit was made into a 3-D image and fitted on invisible avatars for the virtual show.[3] Mvuemba has background in fashion merchandising but mainly incorporates intricate 3D technology into her design process using software such as Procreate, CLO, and Blender.[4]

After gaining public recognition Mvuemba went on to create 3 more ready-to-wear collections, Dream (Fall/Winter 2021)[5], Live Out Loud (Spring/Summer 2022)[6] and Untitled (Fall/Winter 2022)[7]. She plans on releasing another line called Bloom this Spring 2023[8]
