Andrew Kwon (born September 23, 1995) is a South Korean-American fashion designer in New York City. Kwon established his eponymous label in 2020 in Manhattan, New York and debuted his first official collection in the Spring of 2021.[1] He is best known for his wedding and evening wear dresses.[2][3]. He studied fashion at Parsons School of Design|Parsons the New School for Design.[2]

Early life and education

Kwon was born in Denver, Colorado, and grew up throughout the United States, including Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Aurora, Colorado, and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.[4] His parents are Korean immigrants who are business owners and he has an older brother[5].

Kwon's interest of art led him to pursue taking multiple art courses throughout his junior high school and high school career. He attended Grandview High School (Colorado) where he graduated in the Class of 2014. He attended Parsons School of Design earning a degree in fashion design in 2019[6]. Kwon initially studied architecture and interior design before studying fashion design[1].[7] Kwon was awarded the Luxury Education Foundation Scholarship in 2018 and was chosen to showcase his work at Neiman Marcus Hudson Yards.[8] He went on to represent Parsons against seven other fashion schools in the US for the annual Supima Design Competition[9] in 2019 where he presented his collection, Whispering Garden during New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week.

Career

In the winter of 2018, Kwon was the recipient of the Luxury Education Foundation Scholarship Award.[10]

His thesis collection led him to be showcased at The Shops at Hudson Yard's Neiman Marcus and worn by celebrities for various publications including Nathalie Emmanuel co-star from Game of Thrones in the Nylon (magazine)|Nylon September Cover Story in 2019[11] and on Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray for her final photoshoot with the Miss Universe|Miss Universe Organization[12].

After graduating in 2019, Kwon launched his eponymous brand Andrew Kwon in 2020. In the Spring of 2021, Kwon launched his bridal collection, Collection 1- reminiscence[13] an ode to the pandemic bride which was debuted during New York Fashion Week and landed him his first profile by Forbes[1].

In the Fall of 2021, Kwon returned with his second bridal collection, Collection 2 - dreamer which was released with his profile in The New York Times[14]. Following the release of his second collection, Kwon was interviewed and profiled by The New York Times in October 2021. Kwon's work began appearing throughout various media publications including Harper's Bazaar|Harpers Bazaar[15], Brides (magazine)|Brides[16], Women's Wear Daily |Women's Wear Daily (WWD)[17], Fashionista (website)|Fashionista[18], and L'Officiel[19].

Kwon has stated in his interviews that one of his main inspirations behind his work has been music, noting Andrea Bocelli being a great inspiration to him and his mother. Shortly after, his designs began appearing in the Andrea Bocelli 2021 Tour accompanied and worn by singer Loren Allred.[6]

Personal life

Kwon revealed in his interview with Elle Korea that his full name is Andrew "Jun O" Kwon. He has stated in multiple publications that his greatest inspiration is his mother. Kwon, as an Asian American individual himself has been a part of various AAPI related topics and conversations including one with Josie Natori and Derek Lam.[6][20]
