Michael R. Schmidt is an American attorney and the current Commissioner of the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance.
Background
Schmidt was born in Cambridge, Mass. and grew up in Riverdale in the Bronx and Millbrook in Duchess County.
Schmidt earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Yale University and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School.
Career
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo nominated Schmidt to be Tax and Finance Commissioner on January 6, 2019. He was confirmed by the State Senate on June 20, 2019.[1]
As Commissioner, he has sought to improve the taxpayer experience, particularly for low income taxpayers.[2] (3)
Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Schmidt served as Senior Economic Advisor to the Governor and Deputy Secretary for Economic Development. (4)
Mr. Schmidt previously served as an economic policy advisor to Secretary Hillary Clinton. (5)
Schmidt was also a policy analyst in the Office of Domestic Finance at the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
