Andrea Gobbi is an Italian record producer, mixing and mastering engineer, multi-instrumentalist and composer. Originally from Rome, he moved to Scotland in 2001 and is currently based in Glasgow.

Career

Musician

In 2001 Andrea founded and was also composer, arranger and producer of folk and electronic band Laki Mera.[1] in 2004. The band used a blend of acoustic and electronic instruments as well as live samples of machinery to create electro pop songs.

While being part of the band Laki Mera, Andrea Gobbi together with band members Laura Donnelly and Keir Long released their debut album Clutter in 2008, The proximity Effect in 2011.[2]

Andrea's current work is mainly at his music studio Carrier Waves in Glasgow, although he still performs live as an electronic musician with Jarlath Henderson’s band.[3] Work in his studio entails creating beats and soundscapes, triggering samples of acoustic instruments through the use of an array of different electronic devices, such as the Percussa wireless audiocubes.

Producer and engineer

Andrea’s work as a producer and studio engineer started to get publicly noticed in 2013 when three of the albums he produced and engineered featured in the Scottish Herald’s Top 50 Albums of the Year[4] : Turn all Memory to White Noise[5] by Laki Mera , Later...When TV Turns to Static by Glasvegas And Airfix by Ross Ainslie and Jarlath Henderson.[6]

He is regularly working with well-established and award winning artists such as Jarlath Henderson, Treacherous Orchestra, Talisk, Hamish Napier, Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton.[7]

Gobbi mixed, recorded and produced two albums that received five stars reviews and were selected as Top of the World records by folk magazine Songlines: Sanctuary by Ross Ainslie[8] and Hearts Broken and Heads Turned by Jarlath Henderson.[9]

At present he works for the band Talisk as production manager and live engineer. He also produced, engineered and mixed their album Beyond.[10] The band have won various awards, including the Belhaven Bursary for Innovation in Music, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards among others.

He contributed to the creation of folk duo Ross Ainslie and Ali Hutton,[11] for whom he regularly works as a producer. Ainslie and Hutton won a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award for Best Duo in 2017[12] and were nominated for the same award in 2018.

Andrea has worked as a live sound engineer with many Scottish artists since the start of his career in 2005. These include the 11-piece band Treacherous Orchestra, for whom he also co-engineered their most recent album Grind.[13]

From 2011 throughout 2014 he worked as live engineer for Glaswegian indie band Glasvegas. The band also worked with Andrea in his studio on all of their recordings during that time, with special focus on their 3rd album, both mixed and recorded by Andrea in 2012.

Since 2013 he has regularly been a live sound engineer at the main arena of the Rainforest World Music Festival which takes place in Borneo, Malaysia.

Since 2017 Andrea has been the main sound engineer for Showcase Scotland Expo, an established music organisation committed to promote mainly traditional and folk Scottish music around the world.

Awards

Andrea Gobbi won a Scottish Trad Award for Producer of the Year in 2018[14] and was nominated for Studio Engineer of the Year in 2019.
