Andjela Kankaras (born 21 January 1990)[1] is a former professional tennis player from Montenegro.
Team Competitions
Kankaras represented Montenegro in team competitions on multiple occasions:
- Fed Cup in 2007 (Port Louis, Mauritius) and 2008 (Yerevan, Armenia), competing in in the Europe/Africa Zone Group III
- World University Games in 2011 (Shenzhen, China)[2]
- Master'U BNP Paribas in 2009 (Poitiers, France)
College Career
As a freshman, Kankaras posted a 23-14 singles and 20-18 doubles records. Her 23 singles wins were good enough to tie for the 9th all-time in the Washington State University's tennis program singles season wins list. As a sophomore, Kankaras posted a 19-17 singles and 18-14 doubles records. As a junior, Kankaras posted a 24-18 singles and 24-17 doubles records. In 2011, she was elected as a team captain. With the team, finished season ranked no.32 nationally, competing in Pac-12 conference.
As a senior, Kankaras, continuing to serve as a team captain, posted a 19-11 singles and 9-14 doubles records. In 2013, she was a recipient of Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award[3] and ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship[4] for the Northwest region. Same year she received Pac-12 Postgraduate Scholarship[5] and WSU Outstanding Student-Athlete[6] awards. Kankaras ended her career tied for fifth on the school's all-time singles victories list with 87.
Coaching Career
Between 2013-2015, Kankaras served as an assistant coach at University at Albany SUNY Division I tennis program. During her 2-year coaching career, Great Danes reached a final of America East Conference in 2015. Kankaras recruited 3 players that led the team in winning America East Championship in 2016 and qualifying for the NCAA Division I championship for the first time in the school history.
