Bishop Manoel da Cruz Nogueira, O.Cist - (Ordem (Lousada), February 5, 1690 — Mariana, January 3, 1764) was a Portuguese Catholic prelate, bishop of the diocese of São Luís do Maranhão (1739-1747) and the first bishop of Mariana (1748-1764). Doctor in theology from the University of Coimbra in 1726, he was appointed lecturer at the same University in 1728, by Dom João V. He was master of novices at the Royal Monastery of Alcobaça until he was appointed to the diocese of Maranhão in 1739. On September 1, 1745 he was selected as the first bishop of Mariana and his selection to the see of Mariana was confirmed on December 15, 1745. At the age of 57, he left São Luís do Maranhão on August 3, 1747. For seven months, while waiting for the rainy season to pass, he stopped in Piauí. He then followed the São Francisco River until he found the Rio das Velhas. Already approaching Mariana, for a few days he a farm located in the parish of Itabira do Campo, now Itabirito. From there, he went to Vila Rica and finally arrived in Mariana. However, Dom Frei Manoel da Cruz had already taken possession of his new diocese on February 27, 1748, through his attorney Father Dr. Lourenço José de Queirós Coimbra, vicar of Sabará, who governed the new diocese until the arrival of the bishop. Dom Frei Manoel da Cruz, after an episcopate marked by many struggles, setbacks, suffering and illness, died on January 3, 1764 and was buried in the Cathedral of Mariana, next to the main altar, and today his remains rest in the crypt of the Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Mariana.[1]
