Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas is a hotel chain in Thailand that was founded in 2001.[1].
The hotel chain spans Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Portugal, Qatar, Seychelles, Spain, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam and Zambia[2]. Anantara is part of Minor Hotels, which also operates other hotel brands such as Avani Hotels & Resorts, Niyama, Naladhu, Oaks & Elewana[3].
History
Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas was launched in 2001 with their first property in Hua Hin, Thailand[4]. Anantara launched its first property in Koh Samui, Thailand, in November 2004[5].
Qasr Al Sarab Desert by Anantara was launched in 2009, and in 2011, Anantara opened Anantara Kihavah Maldives, which was the first wholly owned Anantara hotel outside Thailand[6]. Anantara Sanya Resort, Anantara’s first resort in China, was launched in 2012[7].
Anantara Chiang Mai Resort was launched in 2013, with The Chedi Chiang Mai being rebranded under Anantara[8]. Anantara Hoi An Resort in Vietnam was inaugurated in 2013[9].
Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort was opened in 2013[10]. Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa was also launched in 2013 in Abu Dhabi[11]. Anantara debuted in Mozambique in 2013, with the launch of Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, which was formerly known as Indigo Bay Resort & Spa[12].
In 2015, former Four Seasons Bangkok was rebranded under Anantara as Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel[13]. Anantara established its presence in Qatar in 2015, with the launch of Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara[14].
Anantara Kalutara Resort and Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort marked Anantara’s entry to Sri Lanka in late 2015 and early 2016[15]. Anantara launched 2 properties in Oman in 2016; Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort and Al Baleed Resort Salalah by Anantara[16].
Anantara launched its first property in Europe in Algarve, Portugal in 2017, with Tivoli Victoria being rebranded as Anantara Vilamoura Algarve Resort[17]. Anantara’s first Spanish property, Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Benahavís Marbella Resort, started operations in 2019[18].
Anantara Desaru Coast Resort opened in Malaysia in 2019[19]. Anantara’s first property in North Africa, Anantara Tozeur Resort, was launched in Tunisia in December 2019[20].
Anantara is also set to debut in Dublin, alongside the other European properties in Portugal and Spain[21]. Anantara Veli Resort, Anantara’s adults-only property in the Maldives, offered an all-you-can-stay resort package in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic[22]
