Anant Suryaji Salkar (13 May 1965 - 9 October 2022) was a journalist, writer, poet, and translator from Goa. He worked in the field of journalism for 28 years for daily newspapers including Tarun Bharat, Sunaparant, Lokmat, and Gomantak.[1]

Salkar received multiple accolades for his literary and journalistic pursuits and won several state level awards for journalism, as well as prizes for poetry and one-act plays.

He died in a road accident at Chorao, Goa in October 2022.[2]

Early life

Hailing from the village of Pilgao - Bicholim, Salkar received his secondary education at Our Lady of Piety High School, Collem. He pursued his higher secondary education at Shri Shantadurga Higher Secondary School, Bicholim. He graduated from St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, majoring in history and economics, with first class.

Career

Anant began his career in journalism in 1994 through Tarun Bharat. He was promoted to Bureau Chief of the Goa edition in 2000. He was involved in launching Tarun Bharat's English edition, Groove.

In 2005, he joined Daily Sunaparant as assistant editor, and was promoted to editor in 2008.

In 2010, Anant joined Lokmat Media, Goa edition as an assistant editor. He managed the editorial page and Sunday edition of Lokmat, before joining Daily Gomantak, where he worked as assistant editor until his death in October 2022.[3]

Work

Fluent in Marathi, Konkani, and English, he translated prose and poetic pieces of some eminent thinkers in Goa and India to Marathi.[4]

His poems and one-act plays have also won several state-level awards.[3]

Death and body donation

On 1 October 2022 he was on his way home from his office where he sustained severe head injuries in a car accident at Chorao, Goa. He was transported to Goa Medical College for a long surgery and was then admitted in the ICU, where he stayed till his death on 9 October 2022.

According to a wish he expressed in his youth, Salkar's family donated his body to Goa Medical College to further medical education in the state.[1]

Awards and recognition

He was posthumously honored by the Bori Development Trust for his contributions to journalism, at the Bori Utsav 2023.[5]

His death was condoled at the Goa Legislative Assembly, under a motion passed by minister Ramesh Tawadkar.[6]
