Anand Kamalakar (born January 20, 1969) is an American documentary filmmaker known for work on Salam: The First Muslim Nobel Laureate, Heart of Stone, and Holy (un)Holy River.
Anand grew up in Hyderabad, India, where he also did his schooling from Vidyaranya High School and Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Public School, with his undergraduate at Nizam College.
Following a Masters degree in Mass Communication from the University of Hyderabad, he completed a Masters in Media Studies from Bowling Green State University, Ohio
Career
Anand started his career in New York as an editor for flagship news magazine shows at Primetime, 20/20, Nightline, GMA at ABC News and Dateline (NBC). He edited the Emmy Nominated documentary on the Iraq War for Primetime (ABC) titled Brothers in Arms, and later branched out into editing feature documentary films working with Sam Pollard on the PBS series American Roots Music.
He worked on the Oscar winning documentary film Born into Brothels as a consulting editor with Ross Kauffman.
His film Salam-The First Muslim Nobel Laureate premiered on Netflix in 2019 and won numerous international awards and screened at around twenty festivals worldwide.[1]
Colonel Kalsi – Beyond the Call, which he directed with Geeta Gandhbir, won best film at Chicago South Asian Film Festival.[2]
His current feature documentary Osborne, about the life of famous computer pioneer Adam Osborne, is funded by ITVS and will be screened on Independent Lens, PBS in 2026.[3]
