Amund Sjølie Sveen (born 1973) is a Norwegian artist, musician and writer born and raised in Vadsø, Finnmark. He is known for his works, actions and texts which he himself describes as «investigations of socio-political issues in our globalized world of market economy» [1]. He has been particularly concerned with questions related to the circumpolar North and the Arctic region, most recently expressed in his international project Pan-ArcticVision from 2023 [2].

Sveen has distinguished himself as an artist who is able to provoke and create public debate with his works, which often address and debate explicit political questions [3]. He has produced, written, directed and performed a number of performance lectures, including Economic Theory for Dummies (2013), premiered at the festival Steirischer Herbst in Graz, Austria, [4][5], Melting (2016) [6], and the dialogue-project Commonism (2018) together with British theater maker Andy Smith [7].

The project Nordting - The Northern Assembly is particularly well known. This staged peoples assembly for northern communities has been visiting the whole circumpolar North, from Alaska, via Canada, Greenland and Iceland, to the northern territories of the Nordic countries [8][9][10][11]. The first event, which took place during in 2014, caused great debate due to the clear and critical mention of oil company Statoil (currently Equinor) as an important sponsor for cultural life in Northern Norway. The then Governor of Troms, Svein Ludvigsen, was one of several prominent voices clearly expressing his displeasure with the project in the media [12]. However, the project received very positive reviews from several commentators [13][14].

Another project that has received a lot of attention is the light installation MAKE THE NORTH GREAT AGAIN! which Sveen and Nordting first installed in Longyearbyen, Svalbard in 2020 in collaboration with the Northern Norwegian Art Museum [15]. The artwork led to intense local debate in Longyearbyen [16]. The installation has later been shown in Nuuk Greenland, among other places [17].

Sveen has both locally and internationally argued for a stronger focus on circumpolar cooperation in the North, and frequently insists on using the term «pan-arctic» [18][19].

In 2023, this focus was manifested in Sveen´s new international project Pan-ArcticVision, which is promoted as a «EuroVision for the Arctic» [20], with both partnering institutions and artistic participators from the whole circumpolar north [21][22].
