The band released their debut album, House of Black + White, in 2021, followed by their second full-length album, Katharsis, in 2024.[4][1] Katharsis was described by Post-Punk.com as "gothic-laced alt rock", while Gothic Beauty noted its incorporation of darkwave and industrial elements.[1][2] In December 2025, the band's EP Purification ranked number four on ReGen Magazine's list of the top 25 EPs of the year.[5]
Amulet is signed to Distortion Productions.[6]
History
2020–2023: House of Black + White
Amulet was formed in late 2020 after founding members MJ Phoenix and Stephanie Stryker left a previous project.[7]
Written in Washington, D.C. and Dallas, Texas while working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic, the pair developed their debut album House of Black + White as a self-released project. In interviews, the band described the album as addressing themes of love and loss, alongside dissatisfaction with the political landscape of the time.[7]
The album was released on April 20, 2021 and was recorded at Exhale Studios in Herndon, Virginia with engineer Devin Spear.[4][7]
Perfect Fusion
In October 2022, the band released Perfect Fusion, an EP of remixes from House of Black + White, featuring remixes from Stabbing Westward, Grendel (band), The Joy Thieves, 11Grams, Stoneburner, Red This Ever, and unitcode:machine.[8]
When Winter Comes
In December 2023, Amulet released the standalone single, "When Winter Comes," that was released alongside remixes by William Faith, Dan Milligan, and 11Grams.[9]
2024–2025: Katharsis
After three years of writing, Amulet released their second studio album Katharsis on October 18, 2024.[1] Written in Washington, D.C., Iceland, and Wales, the album was the band's first studio release on Distortion Productions.[10]
The album was recorded at Populist Studios in Chicago, Illinois in February 2024 and produced by Dan Milligan of The Joy Thieves.[10]
In May 2025, the band released "Queen of Codependency" as an exclusive track for Electronic Saviors: Industrial Music to Cure Cancer's compilation Electronic Saviors: Industrial Music to Cure Cancer Volume 7, released by Distortion Productions and Metropolis Records.[11]
Purification
In November 2025, Amulet released Purification, an EP of reworkings and remixes of songs from Katharsis. According to the band, the EP includes two new versions of the track "So Cold", as well as remixes by Interface (band), Tragic Impulse, and The Synthetic Dream Foundation.[12]
In December 2025, Purification ranked number four on ReGen Magazine's list of the top 25 EPs of 2025.[5]
2026–present
In a 2025 interview with Sounds and Shadows, the band stated that they had begun work on a third full-length album to be produced by Christopher Hall (musician) of Stabbing Westward.[13]
Musical Style
Amulet’s music has been described by critics as incorporating elements of gothic rock, darkwave, and electronic music.[1][2]
Their debut album House of Black + White was described by Post-Punk.com as analog alternative rock, while their 2024 album Katharsis marked the introduction of more electronic and industrial elements.[4][1] Post-Punk.com described Katharsis as “gothic-laced alt rock”, while Gothic Beauty noted its incorporation of darkwave and industrial influences.[1][2]
In a 2025 interview with Brutal Resonance, the band used the term "girldustrial" to describe aspects of their more electronic material, characterizing it as a melodic, female-fronted approach to industrial-influenced music.[3]
