Amitava Bhattacharya, (born January 2, 1967) is an Indian social entrepreneur hailing from Kolkata, West Bengal. He is an alumnus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, where he completed his engineering degree from 1985 to 1989. Bhattacharya is also a Chevening–Gurukul Scholar in Leadership and Excellence from London School of Economics (2008).[1]
With a career spanning over 34 years, Amitava has garnered extensive global experience. In 2000, he founded banglanatak dot com, an organization dedicated to the intersection of culture and development. Through his visionary approach, Bhattacharya has spearheaded numerous initiatives, leveraging the transformative power of culture to drive social change and sustainable development. Under his leadership, banglanatak dot com has become a renowned platform for fostering cultural preservation, empowerment, and inclusivity.[2]
Biography
Early life
Before starting his social entrepreneurship journey, he worked in software industry – starting with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in India during 1989-1994 and then at Silicon Valley in USA.[3]
Notable Works and Achievements
AFL is a success story and a live case study in this domain, earned a number of UN recognitions[4] and global accolades. Mr. Bhattacharya also started World Peace Music Festival, Sur Jahan (www.surjahan.com)[5] [6]in 2011 and this annual non-commercial festival has evolved as a destination for music lovers worldwide with participation of over 50 world music bands from 32 countries.[7]
Amitava also introduced another powerful tool, village festivals, to promote rural marginalized villages and transform them into cultural tourism destinations. In March 2023, Amitava’s leadership & banglanatak dot com's work got global recognition as it was selected as Harvard Business case, published and available at the Harvard Business Publishing Education site.[8] Amitava also received the Indian Responsible Tourism Award 2023 from Outlook in ‘pathfinder’ category.[9]
Published works
Amitava Bhattacharya has presented and published articles and book chapters in various national and international forums. His noteworthy publications include his book chapter on Art for Life: Intangible Cultural Heritage and Livelihood Development in India, published in the editorial volume Museums, Heritage and International Development.[10]
Recognition
Amitava's work in the village caught the attention of the renowned national television channel, Times Now, in 2012. The villagers' heartfelt appreciation was captured, and as a testament to his efforts, Amitava was honoured with the prestigious Global Amazing Indian Award.[11]
