American Wines Matter (AWM) is a cultural media platform created by Tracey Lyons in 2018. It is best known for providing historical context for Caribbean carnivals and masqueraders, along with acting as a one-of-a-kind forum for in-depth cultural conversations.[1]

The goal of creating this unique platform was to raise knowledge of Caribbean culture, inspire individuals of all backgrounds to embrace carnival, and foster self-love. Since its inception, AWM has turned into a popular movement and a full-service platform that facilitates travel, product reviews, masquerader tips/advice along with running its eCommerce store.[2]

History

Tracey Lyons, a digital content creator, and genuinfluencer founded AWM in 2018 intending to bridge cultural barriers in regards to Caribbean culture and carnival. Lyons was introduced to Caribbean Carnival back in 2015 when she was going through major life changes. The fact that the Caribbean Carnival stuck with her, inspired her, and motivated her eventually led to the establishment of American Wines Matter.[3]

Lyons wanted to raise knowledge of Caribbean culture, inspire individuals from all walks of life to celebrate carnival, and encourage people to embrace their true selves with this platform. The creation of AWM is backed by Lyons’ vast research on Caribbean culture and the Caribbean carnival experience.[4]

AWM apart from functioning as a cultural platform also serves as the leading space to check out travel, product reviews, masquerader tips/advice, and also a funky eCommerce store.

Philosophy

AWM focuses:

  • To bring attention to an African American woman's experience of discovering her Caribbean heritage.
  • To document the experiences of Caribbean Mas, J'ouvert, fetes, and other festivities in a way that inspires people to embrace the culture and dispels many preconceptions held by those who are unfamiliar with its history.
  • To raise awareness and love of Soca and Caribbean Mas among all people who are interested, particularly those who feel excluded due to their cultural roots.
  • To guide seasoned and inexperienced masqueraders and revelers, as well as tips and tricks, in order to make their experiences more enjoyable and stress-free
  • To serve as a sounding board for a variety of platforms that make major cultural contributions to African-American communities.
  • To educate people about health issues that are unique to the black population.
  • To foster self-love in all women of all shapes and sizes, as well as to encourage them to move outside their comfort zones and appreciate Caribbean culture.
