Almantas Savonis (born 6 January 1970) is a professional Lithuanian handball player, who played in goalkeeper position. Savonis played in the World and European championships with the Lithuania National Handball team. In 1999, Savonis won EHF Cup with SC Magdeburg.
Biography
Almantas Savonis started playing handball in his hometown; later he came to the youth school of Granitas Kaunas, where he made his debut in the first Lithuanian league. His team has won the championship every year since the existence of a separate Lithuanian league; therefore Savonis soon sought a new challenge and moved to Karlovac in the Croatian league, where he played for 3 seasons. In 1998 he signed up for the first time in the German Handball Bundesliga with the SC Magdeburg Gladiators, where he won the 1999 EHF Cup. Savonis, however, was usually only the second choice in goal for the Magdeburg team behind Henning Fritz, so after just one year he moved on to Dessauer HV 1996 in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga. In 2000 he went for a year to the Spanish club Garbel Zaragoza, which at the time played in the Liga ASOBAL; In 2001, Savonis returned to Germany and joined the second division club HC Empor Rostock. After just one year, he went to HSG Düsseldorf, with whom he promoted to the first division in 2004. With the Düsseldorf, he managed to stay in the top German division for four years, managed to be selected for 3 times as the top 3 goalkeeper in the Bundesliga.
