Alice Hemming (born 4 May 1977) is an English author of children's picture books and middle grade fiction. She is best known for her picture book The Leaf Thief and her Dark Unicorn series.

Life and Career

Alice Thorp (writes under her maiden name, Hemming[1]) was born in England, UK in 1977. As a child she loved drawing and writing, and wanted to write a book when she grew up. She worked as a librarian, a website editor, and an Outreach manager for a university. She continued writing and drawing as a hobby but never pursued it as a career until she had children and left her full-time job.[2] Her first book, The Black and White Club was published in September 2013.[3] She is now the author of 59 books, including her picture book The Leaf Thief (illustrated by Nicola Slater) which has been translated into 19 languages[1], reached number 5 on The New York Times Best Sellers list for children's picture books[4], and won the Channel Island Children's Picture Book of the Year in 2021.[5] Hemming lives in Hertfordshire, UK with her husband and two children,[1] and works closely with her writing critique group.[6]

Hemming's Dark Unicorn books are a series of fairytales set in a single literary universe, but with different characters and stories.[7] Hemming has cited Hans Christian Andersen and his work as a main inspiration for her Dark Unicorn fairytales. She names The Little Match Girl by Hans Christian Andersen as the first bedtime story that caught her attention when she was four-years-old.[8]

As well as picture books and middle grade fiction, Hemming is also known for writing books designed for learning to read, used in schools[9] (published by Collins Big Cat[10], Ransom[11], and Maverick[12]), in addition to a short story collection of Bedtime Stories for Plants[13][14][15][16].
