Hughes' career in screenwriting took off in 2015 with a number of web series and short films before his breakout role co-writing the hit BBC show Dreaming Whilst Black (2018) with Adjani Salmon. Collectively he has won over 3 international awards and nominated for 6 others, including 1 BAFTA nomination. His feature script Mignonette was a finalist at the 2017 London Film Awards.[7] In 2023, Hughes co-wrote all six episodes of Dreaming Whilst Black Series 1, which earned a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.[8] The second series aired in October 2025 and received five stars from The Guardian.[9]
