Alfredo Barsuglia (*1980 in Graz) is a Austrian contemporary artist..[1]
Life and work
Barsuglia studied painting and graphic art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in Vienna and at the Academy of Fine Arts Krakow (Akademia Sztuk Pięknych) from 1999 to 2003. In 2019 and 2022/2023 he taught the course Public Space and Media at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Alfredo Barsuglia lives and works in Vienna.[1]
Alfredo Barsuglia's work is multimedia. His oeuvre includes painting, sculpture, installations and interventions, often in public spaces, which pursue performative and participatory aspects, right through to video art.[2] Since 2007, he has also been regularly responsible for stage design and scenography, including at Tanzquartier[1], brut Theater[3] and the ImPulsTanz-Festival.[4] His works deal with socio-politically relevant themes such as economics, ecology, the treatment of nature and the boundary between the private and public spheres.[5]
Alfredo Barsuglia's artistic practice revolves around exploring the complex relationship between art and society with the aim of stimulating a discourse on social issues. He uses various media such as painting, photography and sculpture to reflect and question social, economic and environmental values. Barsuglia's works often question expectations, counter situations and deal with socio-politically controversial topics. In this way, he creates art that delves deep into the complexity of the world and causes confusion in the viewer.[6]
He is known for numerous projects in public spaces, including “Social Pool” (permanent since 2014)[7] in the Mojave-Desert, „Mariainsel“ (2018) in Fürstenfeld[8] and „Suahtsnuk“ (2021) in Graz.[9] „Das letzte Haus“ at Museumsquartier Wien (2022)[10] or „Wohnkultur“ at museumkrems in Krems (2023)[11] address our cultural traces, the so-called ''throw-away society“ and at the same time highlight the relevance and possibilities of resource conservation and upcyclingh.[12]
His paintings are mostly still lifes, which often show small deviations or material additions within the canvas, which at first glance usually appear to have no connection with what is being painted. Through such irritations, as well as through misleading work titles, Barsuglia explores the concept of language and the creation of meaning and engages recipients in a playful dialogue with the artwork. He creates meaning and engages recipients in a playful dialog with the artwork. His still lifes are usually characterized by a minimalist but very precise depiction of a wide variety of objects such as fruit, animals or everyday objects, depicted on thinly primed canvas or wood. Even if slight shading sometimes indicates a space within the canvas, the paintings do not depict any spatiality or background. The emptiness around the motif lends it a detached and sublime character.[12][13]
“For me, these paintings represent something pure and untouched. The motif, which I find aesthetically pleasing, is detached from its surroundings, from irritation and distraction. It has something meditative, pure. I see the subject as a portrait. Whether fruit, animal or object, I always try to capture their character.
The things depicted have something sublime, superhuman, transcendental. The “emptiness” around the motif plays a major role in this. Depending on the motif, a larger or smaller empty area is needed to create a balanced relationship between the image and the surrounding space. I simply like this kind of painting.”|title=Interview|source=|author=Alfredo Barsuglia}}
