Alfred Leroy Burt (28 November 1888 - 21 June 1971) was a key figure in Canadian historical scholarship in the early twentieth century.

Life and career

Burt was born in 1888 in Listowel, Ontario and graduated from the University of Toronto in 1910. He studied at Corpus Christi College, Oxford as a Rhodes Scholarship. He taught at the University of Alberta from 1913 to 1930. During the First World War numerous University of Alberta professors and instructors left teaching to serve in the Canadian military. Burt was one of these joining the First Canadian Tank Battalion in early 1918. He also played a role in the Khaki University for Canadian soldiers overseas from 1917 until his return to Canada in 1919.[1]

In 1930, after some years as Head of the Department of History at the University of Alberta, Burt became professor of History at the University of Minnesota.[2] He retired in 1957 as an emeritus and served as a visiting professor at Carleton University, the University of Chicago, and the University of Manitoba.

Burt won the J. B. Tyrrell Historical Medal in 1946.[3]

Burt was a key figure in Historiography of Canada scholarship in the 1920s and 1930s. His writing placed emphasis on Canada's international relations, the importance of a better understanding between French and English in Canada, and the significance of western Canada in the development of the nation.

Burt also emphasized the importance of original research using source materials. He was one of a growing list of scholars who reshaped the writing of Canadian history through the scrutiny and evaluation of archival documents.[4]
