Alf Vanags (Alfreds Helmuts Vanags) was a Latvian-British economist. Born in Riga in 1942, he grew up and received his education in London, where his parents settled after leaving Latvia as refugees in 1944.[1] After graduating from the London School of Economics, he commenced his academic career at Queen Mary University of London. Alf Vanags returned to Latvia in the early 1990s to join the EuroFaculty and the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga.

In 2001, he founded a research center in Riga named the Baltic International Centre for Economic Policy Studies (BICEPS).[2] Alf Vanags was a founding editor of the Baltic Journal of Economics.[3] He frequently provided expert commentary on the Latvian economy in prominent media outlets. Since 2017, a series of regular memorial lectures have been held in honor of Alf Vanags. Speakers for these lectures have included Erik Berglöf, John Broome, Francis Kramarz, and Ruben Enikolopov .[4]
