Alexey Mikhailovich Agranovich (born October 23, 1970, Moscow, USSR) is a Russian actor, director, producer, artistic director of the Gogol Center (2021-2022).[1][2]

Early life and education

Alexey Agranovich was born on 23 October 1970 in Moscow, to Mikhail Agranovich, a director of photography, and Emilia Kulik, a actress.[3]

In 1987 he graduated from school No.45 (school named after Leonid Milgram)[4]. After leaving school, he worked at the film studio Mosfilm, at the same time (1987-1988) he studied at the theater-studio Presence (direction - O. Fershtein). In 1988-1990 he worked in the Russian Army Theatre|Central Academic Theater of the Russian Army.[3]

In 1990, he enrolled in an acting and directing course of Sergei Solovyov (film director)|Sergei Solovyov and Valery Rubinchik at the VGIK as a non-matriculating student, in 1991-1994 he was studying at the acting course of Albert Filozov and Armen Dzhigarkhanyan.[3]

Career

While studying at VGIK, he participated in the organization of the International Student Film Festival. His first independent project was a joint concert of DDT and Kalinov Most at the Theater of the Soviet Army on October 28, 1994.[3]

In 1994–1995, he was a representative of the DDT group in Moscow and advertising producer of the Paganel company.[5]

Since 1995, he has been acting in theater and cinema, directing films, theatrical performances, festivals and special events.[5]

In 1996, he created a production company Ball Lightning (together with an animation studio Shar), that was operating in the segment of special events.[5]

In 2003, he worked as one of the presenters of the Football of Russia hosts (on the TV channels Russia and Sport). In 2006 he became a director and host of the sketch show Gogol Street on the REN TV channel.[3] In 2007, he started to work as a head of the entertainment programs department of the Production Management Department of the CTC Media television holding.[6]

Chairman of the Charitable Foundation Fragile people (Charitable Foundation was established in 2014 to help patients with osteogenesis imperfecta and other bone pathology).[7]

His directing and producing experience spans over a hundred ceremonies and shows: MIFF opening/closing ceremonies (2000-2010, 2018 - present), Opening/closing ceremonies of the Kinotavr Film Festival (2005 - present), Golden Eagle Award Ceremony (2003–2010, 2019–present), The Art Newspaper Awards Ceremony (2013 - present), TEFI Prize (2009-2010), "Hanukkah in the Kremlin" (FEOR Man of the Year Award, 2007–2009, 2019, 2020), Kandinsky Prize (2009-2014), Award "Kommersant of the Year" (Publishing House "Kommersant", within the PEF, 2010–2013), Charity performances The Little Prince (for the Podari Zhizn Foundation, 2011), The Butterfly Effect (for the BELLA Foundation, 2012), Danila Kozlovsky's show "The Big Dream of an Ordinary Man" (2014) and others.[3][8]

General Producer of the Sakhalin International Film Festival "On the Edge. East" (SIFF "On the Edge. East", since 2012), Kaliningrad International Film Festival "On the Edge. West" (KIFF "On the Edge. West", since 2019), the Sakhalin Open Film Festival of the Future "Lightplay" ("Lightplay Film Fest", since 2019).[9][10]

In 2019, he played the main role in the film The Humorist.[11][12][13] For this role, he received Art Film Fest and White Elephant awards, and was also nominated for The Golden Unicorn Awards and Nika Award.[14]

He was appointed artistic director of the Gogol Center. He took office on February 26, 2021.[15]
