Alexandra “Alexa” Scharff (born April 29, 1930), is a fashion designer, real estate investor, and patron of the arts who is best known for her “Alexa” women’s swimsuits and clothing line[1][2]. Scharff’s second husband and business partner was Werner G. Scharff, designer of the Lanz flannel nightgown[3], with whom she invested in many Venice Beach commercial and residential properties, contributing to the development of the city as a tourist destination and a hub of creativity[3]. After Werner Scharff's death in 2006, Alexandra partnered with his second wife, Simone Hormel Scharff, to continue managing his trust. Hormel's son from a previous marriage is American guitarist Smokey Hormel.

Career

Alexandra Scharff started working for Lanz Incorporated in the 1950’s. Alongside co-owner, Werner Scharff, Alexandra designed dresses, sleepwear, and swimsuits[4]. The Alexa junior swimsuit label featured bold colors and patterns and youthful designs, which caught the eye of fashion editors noting summer of 1969 trends[5]. Her own label, Alexa, was sold in Lord & Taylor and Neiman-Marcus[6], among other high-end department stores.
