Alexander Woodman is a Saudi-based author and a professor of medicine whose studies examine genetic, behavioral, and preventive aspects of health. His research connects academic and clinical institutions across the Middle East and the U.S.
Education
Woodman earned an Associate of Science degree from Santa Monica College. He then attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he obtained a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts degree and was part of the UCLA Honors program.[1][2] While at UCLA, he received the Chancellor Gene Block's award and the Wasserman Fellowship. As part of his undergraduate work, he documented the narratives of Holocaust survivors.[3] Woodman earned a Master of Science degree in Gerontology from the University of Southern California (USC), where he served as a teaching and research assistant.[4][5][6] He later obtained a Master of Public Health degree from California State University, Fullerton, where he was a recipient of the California Predoctoral Fellowship.[7] Woodman completed his doctoral studies at the University of Salford in Manchester, United Kingdom, where his research examined dietary behaviors and health knowledge among students in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.[8][9][10] He received his clinical training at the Whipps Cross University Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital in London. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral research in preventive medicine at Harvard Medical School and received a Fulbright Research Fellowship to conduct research at the School of Medicine, Arabian Gulf University, in Bahrain.[11][12] His academic advisors included Dr. Margaret Coffey, Dr. Anna Mary Cooper-Ryan, Dr. Aaron Hagedorn, and Dr. Walter Zelman.[13][14][15]
Career
Alexander Woodman began his professional career at UCLA and Cal State LA as a research associate. At Cal State LA, he worked with Dr. Walter Zelman and Dr. Howard Xu on techniques for detecting bacterial pathogens. His research at Chiang Mai University Medical Center and the Chiang Mai Provincial Health Office assessed the healthcare needs of Burmese/Myanmar refugees and migrants in Thailand's Saraphi district, Chiang Mai province.[16]Woodman later moved to the Middle East, focusing on clinical research and medical education at a university in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. He collaborated with Saudi Aramco, SABIC, and Sadara petrochemical companies on preventative healthcare in the workplace.[17] He has collaborated on international projects addressing preventive medicine, reproductive health, and genetics, including studies conducted at King Fahad Specialist Hospital and other Gulf regional research centers. His work has contributed to cross-institutional initiatives that link academic research with clinical practice in public health.[18] Woodman has held academic and research positions at universities in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Middle East, including Harvard Medical School, Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University and contributed to collaborative research projects at the Arabian Gulf University School of Medicine.[19][20]
Research
Woodman’s research centers on the intersection of genetics, behavior, and global public health. His published studies include investigations of genetic determinants of iron deficiency anemia through analysis of the TMPRSS6 gene, [21][22] the association between leptin gene variations and obesity,[23][24] and antigen levels of PAI-2 in pregnancy among women with homozygous sickle cell anemia. He has also examined how post-diagnosis exercise influences the quality of life of breast cancer survivors.[25] In addition to his genetic and clinical research, Woodman has written on preventive medicine and cultural perspectives on health behavior, with several papers published in international health and medical journals.[26]
Publications and media
Woodman has authored and co-authored more than seventy peer-reviewed and scholarly articles published in journals associated with publishers such as Oxford University Press, Springer Nature,[27] Taylor & Francis,[28] Elsevier,[29] and Wiley.[30] He has served on the editorial boards of the Ibnosina Journal of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences [31] and the Saudi Critical Care Journal. His 2020 book, The Land of ‘Adat, explores Saudi Arabia’s history, traditions, architecture, and daily life. The book is catalogued by the King Fahd National Library in Saudi Arabia and is listed in the collections of several international academic libraries. [32][33] It has been reported to have received recognition from the California State Assembly[34][35][36][37]. In addition to his book, Woodman has contributed book chapters addressing communicable and non-communicable diseases in Middle Eastern contexts, as well as topics in bioethics, including end-of-life care and organ donation ethics.[38][39][40] Woodman has been interviewed by media outlets in the Gulf region, including Middle East Health, Middle East, and Arab News Japan. In 2020, he contributed coverage of the G20 Riyadh Summit and Global Health conferences for the Diplomatic Quarter publication. [41][42] He has conducted and participated in public discussions and interviews with international figures including former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, [43] former President of Finland Tarja Halonen, [44] and Queen Sofía of Spain. [45] In 2019, Woodman attended and reported on the “A Life at the Heart of the Twentieth Century” exhibition in London, which commemorated King Faisal Abdul Aziz Al Saud’s 1919 visit to Europe. [46]
