Alex Zdan is a writer, an award-winning investigative journalist, political commentator, television personality, and former Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New Jersey during the 2024 election. He is best known as a political newscaster for News 12 New Jersey and anchor of their weekly political show "Power & Politics.
Early Life
Zdan grew up in Hillsborough Township, New Jersey.
Journalism Career
In the early days of his journalism career, Zdan worked as a staff writer for the Times of Trenton, earning numerous awards in the responsible journalism category in 2013[1] and 2014.[2]. Notably, Zdan was a key figure in exposing Ocean County Republican Committee Chairman George Gilmore for federal tax evasion[3] in 2016.
During his tenure in journalism, Zdan earned a reputation as a corruption-fighting journalist, always asking politicians the tough questions. In December 2017, Zdan was hired by News 12 New Jersey as a Reporter. He made a name for himself as the host of the network's Power and Politics segment, where he interviewed some of the biggest political power players shaping politics in the Garden State. In November 2023, his position at News 12 was eliminated[4] in what the network called a shift toward 'investing in more in community reporting and events."
In March 2025, TV Asia signed Zdan to a contract to serve as a commentator for the newly launched series, Inside the Headlines[5].
Published Work
In addition to writing articles and investigations for news outlets, Zdan has written op-ed pieces for Newsmax, the Newark Star-Ledger, Save Jersey, and the New Jersey Globe.
His feature true crime story "Gym. Tan. Larceny." appeared in the debut edition of Switchboard, a magazine geared to fast-track works of journalism with cinematic qualities into production. The story is currently in a development pipeline for a documentary series or feature film.
Political Ventures
Candidacy for U.S. Senate
On February 9, 2024, Zdan annouced his candidacy[6] for U.S. Senate in New Jersey, running on a platform calling on the need for more authentic leadership. He told the Associated Press, "If you know me and you know my energy and my abilities and my desire to serve and make people’s lives better, it kind of makes sense to go from the anchor desk to the floor of Congress[7], he said. His campaign announcement video primarily took place at the U.S. border wall.[8] He received endorsements from the Monmouth County Republican Committee,[9] and the Passaic County Regular Republican Organization.[10] On March 25, Zdan dropped[11] his bid for Senate and endorsed[12] eventual Republican nominee bussisman Curtis Bashaw.
ALFA PAC
Following his unsuccessful run for Senate, Zdan launched[13] ALFA PAC, whose goal is to bring authentic leadership back to New Jersey. On the launch, Zdan told Insider NJ, "Authentic leadership is the antidote to the poison in our politics. Our political system has been built around incentivizing behavior that moves candidates away from being their authentic selves and lends itself to policies that fail regular people. No more."
Zdan was a spokesman for Ballot Chase NJ with Cliff Maloney for the 2025 gubernatorial race.
2026 U.S. Senate Campaign
On February 12, 2026, Zdan launched[14] his second bid for U.S. Senate, this time against U.S. Senator Cory Booker. Zdan has received the endorsements of numerous elected and party officials. He also recicved the endorsement of Sid Rosenberg[15].
Personal Life
Zdan resides in Robbinsville, New Jersey.
