Alex Mallis (also known as Alexander M. Ramírez-Mallis) is a Cuban-American, Jewish filmmaker, director of photography, and editor based in Brooklyn, New York.[1]
Early Life and Education
Mallis was raised in New Hampshire and later moved to Brooklyn, where he continues to live and work. He earned an MFA in Integrated Media Arts from Hunter College (CUNY).[2]
Career
His 2022 film Shut Up and Paint, co-directed with artist Titus Kaphar, examines the intersection of art and activism.[3] It won the Grand Jury Prize at both the IFF Boston and Big Sky Documentary Film Festival, was shortlisted for the 95th Academy Awards, and was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Nonfiction Short Filmmaking at the 16th Cinema Eye Honors.[4][5]
Mallis' feature narrative film debut The Travel Companion will premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.[6]
His 2017 documentary series American Boyband was broadcast on ViceTV. The show follows aspiring rapper Kevin Abstract on his first headlining tour as well as the early days of Brockhampton.[7] In 2015, Mallis wrote, directed, and acted in La Noche Buena, a narrative short film shot in Havana, Cuba. The film was notable for being one of the first American narrative shorts made in Cuba since the embargo.[8] In 2014, Mallis directed After Trayvon, a short documentary that reflects on the aftermath of Trayvon Martin’s death. Set in Brooklyn’s Fort Greene Park, the film captures candid discussions about how to navigate encounters with a racist police force. The work was recognized with the James Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism.[9]
Other Projects
In 2021, Mallis gained viral attention when he sold a short audio recording of a fart as an NFT for $85. The satirical stunt was a tongue-in-cheek commentary on the speculative nature of crypto art and was covered by several media outlets as an example of absurdist digital culture.[10][11]
He also performs as part of DJ trio Pleasure Jams under the name Stewey Decimal.[12][13]
