Alen Juginović (born April 9, 1993) is a Croatian neuroscientist, sleep expert and physician at Harvard Medical School.[1] [2] [3] [4] Prior to joining Harvard, he worked at St. Catherine Specialty Hospital in Croatia in the field of pharmacogenomics.[5] Juginović was the founder and president of many international biomedical conferences with Nobel laureate participation such as Nobel Days and Plexus. As of 2020, he is a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School studying the impact of poor sleep on health.[6]
Early life and education
Alen Juginović was born in Split, Croatia in 1993.[7] He graduated from the University of Split where he obtained his MD degree. He was the president of the Student Government at the University of Split School of Medicine and founder of NeuroSplit, a neuroscience group.[7]
Career
After graduating, Juginović briefly worked in the University Hospital Split, before moving to Zagreb to St. Catherine Specialty Hospital where he was working on personalized medicine and pharmacogenomics [8]. He completed two clinical internship programs in the United States. As of 2020, Juginović is working as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. He is studying the effect that poor sleep quality has on health.[6] He is working on the gut-brain axis and oxidative stress during sleep deprivation.[6] He is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine,[9] the official journal of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He is a reviewer for Scientific Reports, part of Nature Portfolio, and PLOS One.
Conferences
Juginović was the president of several international medical conferences. He chaired the Organizing Committee of Practical Knowledge for Students, Nobel Days and Plexus which gathered 2000 participants from 27 countries and 34 nationalities, including close to 10 Nobel laureates.[10]
Awards
Juginović has received multiple awards for his work. He has received the University of Split's President Award, Think Global Award in 2020,[11] Best Young Project Manager in Croatia,[12] and the European Citizen's Prize awarded by the European Parliament in 2021.[13]
