Alao Abiodun (born April 2) is a Nigerian journalist and writer.[1] He hails from Ibadan, Oyo state.[2]Abiodun attended Bishop Howells Memorial Grammer School, Bariga for his secondary school education. He studied at the University of Ibadan (B.Ed - Educational Management and Economics), St. Augustine's College of Education (NCE - Economics Education) and Nigerian Institute of Journalism (PGD - Print Journalism)[3][4][5]He is a 2023 alumnus, Radio Netherland Training Centre (RNTC)[6]

Career

Abiodun's journalism career spans across reporting various beats both locally and internationally.[7][8]

Equipped with years of prolific writing experience and certification, he has been reporting for The Nation – one of Nigeria’s foremost Newspaper since 2019.

Abiodun emeged as 2022 and 2023 fellow for United Nations Reham al-Farra Memorial Journalism Fellowship (UNRAF).[9][10]

He was among the accredited Nigerian journalists selected by the United Nations (UN) to cover the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference, referred to as 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference|COP26 in Glasgow, United Kingdom; and 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, referred to as COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Abiodun also covered the 77th and 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly at the UN Headquarters, Manhattan, respectively.[11][12]

He received his professional journalism training from the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) formerly Premium Times Center for Investigative Journalism (PTCIJ) and has participated in many media-related fellowships, trainings and workshops locally and internationally including 2020 Dubawa Fact-checking fellowship, 2018 Nigeria Hate Speech Hackathon, others.[13][14][15][16]

He emerged as runner-up for the 2021 Anti-corruption star award by Step Up Nigeria.[17]

During his undergraduate sojourn at UI, he was an award-winning student journalist where he bagged many awards. He was a member of Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan, and held many positions. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of Nigerian Universities Education Students' Association (NUESA) Press Organisation.[18][19][20]

Some of Abiodun's awards include; Nominee, five outstanding personalities in Journalism (2017 FOPA Awards); News Reporter of the year - 2018 Campus Journalism Award Abuja; Nominee, 2018 Alfred Opubor prize for campus journalism among others.[21][22][23]

In 2019 and 2021, he was selected as a journalist from Nigeria to cover the Dakar Forum, held in Dakar, Senegal alongside other African Journalists. He has written on diverse societal and contemporary issues that got many readers engaged and also earned him widespread recognition.
