In 2022, Alberto made her feature directorial debut with Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, based on Benjamin Alire Sáenz's award-winning novel.[7] The film starred Max Pelayo, Reese Gonzales, Eugenio Derbez, Eva Longoria, Veronica Falcón, and Kevin Alejandro, and premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival.[8]
Alberto emphasized the personal connection she felt to the project, stating, "I wanted to make a film where brown boys were allowed to love without shame."[9] The film screened at multiple festivals including TIFF and Miami International Film Festival, earning praise for its authentic portrayal of queer adolescence.[10]
In an interview with Vogue Poland, Alberto remarked, "The film is for anyone who has felt invisible, who has longed to find themselves reflected on screen."[11]

Alberto's work is noted for its exploration of identity, coming-of-age themes, and centering of Latino characters.[12] In a Hollywood Reporter interview, she stated, "My own transition taught me that stories of transformation are universal."[13]
