Airam Hernández (Born 1983) is an operatic tenor from the Canary Islands, known for his performances in Italian and French opera repertoire, along with contemporary music and symphonic/oratorio pieces.

Life and Career

Hernández was born in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife. He studied French horn at Conservatorio Superior de Música de Tenerife, and lately finished his vocal studies at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona. Later he was part of the Opera Studio and the Ensemble of the Zurich Opera[1]. His operatic main debut came in 2016 singing the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La traviata at Perm Opera, conducted by Teodor Currentzis in a production by Robert Wilson[2]. He have subsequently debuted the roles of Edgardo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor conducted by the late Jesús López Cobos[3], Faust in Gounod’s Faust[4], Apollo/Dyonisos in Trojahn’s Orest[5]. In 2018 he sang the role of Sardanapalo in the world premiere of Liszt’s unfinished opera Sardanapalo with the Staatskapelle Weimar[6], performance that was posteriorly edited by the record company Audite. In the same year he repriced the role of Alfredo in La Traviata in the opening of the season of Théâtre du Capitole of Toulouse, and at Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg[7], Konzerthaus Dortmund[8] and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg[9]. In 2019 he made his debut in the United States singing Fenton from Verdi’s Falstaff at the Dallas Opera[10]. In the same year he sang the role of Enrico Caruso in the world premiere of the opera Caruso a Cuba at the Dutch National Opera in Amsterdam[11], role from which he obtained the Schaunard Award for the Best Individual Interpretation of the Year in the Netherlands[12]. Later that year he successfully debuted as Pollione in Bellini’s Norma singing nine performances at Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse[13], and debuted at Teatro La Fenice of Venice with Alfredo[14]. In the post pandemic era he debutes as Ulysses in Faure's Pénélope in Toulouse[15], and as Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni at Teatro Real of Madrid[16]. In season 2021/2022 he did an extensive route through all the major Spanish opera houses[17] debuting as Tamino in Mozart's The Magic Flute at Opera de Oviedo[18]; Tebaldo in Bellini's I Capuleti e I Montecchi at Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville[19]; Arcadio in Daniel Catán's Florencia en el Amazonas at Ópera de Tenerife[20]; and reprising the roles of Alfredo in Teatro Calderón of Valladolid[21], and Pollione at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona[22]. In that same season he sang the role of Federico García Lorca in the world premiere of the ópera El Abrecartas, last work of the late Spanish composer Luis de Pablo[23]. In season 2022/2023 he debuted as Rodolfo in Puccini's La bohème in AGAO Pamplona[24], and repriced the roles of Alfredo in LAC Lugano[25], Edgardo at Cologne Opera[26] and Tamino with the Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana in Palermo[27].

His extensive symphonic and oratorio repertoire includes Mozart's Requiem; Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and Christ on the Mount of Olives[28]; Rossini's Stabat Mater[29]; Mendelssohn's Lobgesang[30]; Mascagni's Messa di Gloria; Falla's El retablo de maese Pedro[31]; among others. In 2022 he debuted in Paris singing Verdi's Messa da Requiem at the Philharmonie de Paris[32].

In 2021 he was honored as "Favorite Son of El Rosario" in Tenerife, Municipality in which Hernández spent great part of his younger years.[33]
