Aion Bank is a full-service digital bank founded in October 2019.[1] and launched commercially in February 2020 in Belgium.[2] Headquartered in the Brussels| Brussels-Capital Region, the bank operates under a Belgian banking license and is supervised by the National Bank of Belgium.[3][4]

Alongside its flagship branch located on the Avenue de la Toison d’Or in Brussels, Aion Bank operates four additional branches nationwide.[5]

History

Aion Bank was created following the acquisition of the Italy banking group Monte dei Paschi di Siena (BMP) Belgian subsidiary,[6] one of the world's oldest banking groups, by the US based investment fund, Warburg Pincus in June 2019.[7] Warburg Pincus’s ambition was to transform BMP Belgio into a full-service, subscription-only digital bank designed for both private individuals and SMEs.[8][9][10]

Warburg Pincus turned to Vodeno,[11] a Polish technology company founded by Wojciech Sobieraj, to accelerate Aion Bank's digital transformation from Monte dei Paschi di Siena| BMP Belgio[12]. Wojciech Sobieraj is a banking expert who previously set up the Poland|Polish bank, Alior Bank.[13] Sobieraj is the current CEO of Aion Bank.[14]

In June 2020, Kim Van Esbroeck, former Chief Commercial Officer of Bancontact Payconiq Company, was hired as the bank's Country Head in Belgium.[15][16]
