Career

Competing for California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, he is a three-time NCAA Division I First Team All-American, placing 3rd in the 800 m at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships and 5th at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Championships. He also became the school's first First Team All-American in the men's 800m in division I program history, with a 7th-place finish at the 2023 NCAA finals meet. He holds Cal Poly school records in both the indoor and outdoor 800 m, 1,500 m, mile run, and indoor 1,000 m.[2]

In 2025, he ran 1:45.19 in the indoor 800 m—the fastest ever by an American collegiate athlete indoors. He is a three-time Big West 800 m champion, a 2025 Big West champion in the 1,500 m, and the 2025 Big West Men's Track Athlete of the Meet. McCarthy is the first Cal Poly male athlete to earn All-American honors in the same event both indoors and outdoors in the same year since 1973.[2][3]

In cross country, he helped lead Cal Poly to a Big West title in 2022 by placing third at conference and earned All-Big West honors. He previously competed for Amador Valley High School, where he posted top state finishes in both cross country and track.[2]
