Ahmet Özay (* 1961 in Istanbul, Turkey) is a German journalist, European advisor to former Crimean Tatar People's Medjlis Chairman Mustafa Dzhemilev and Germany representative of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People of Turkish descent.

Life

In 1984, Ahmet Özay completed his undergraduate studies at the Institute of Social Anthropology at Istanbul University. From 1986 to 1993, he completed his master's degree at the Institute of Ethnology at the University of Cologne. During the same period, he worked as a press advisor in the Western Europe office of the Turkish Anadolu Üniversitesi in Cologne.
At WDR he was trained as a radio editor and then worked as a reporter for the German radio stations WDR and Deutsche Welle Turkish editorial office in Cologne. From 1991, he worked as a Germany correspondent for the Turkish departments of BBC World Turkish and NOS. In 1992, he became foreign correspondent for Sabah and ATV in Bonn.[1].
From 1993 he prepared radio reports and news about the fire in Solingen and the ongoing protests. From April 1994 to October 1995 he was a reporter during the Solingen arson trial for the WDR and BBC Turkish Service in Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court.[2]
Between 1995 and 2000, Ahmet Özay worked as news director for the Turkish daily newspaper Sabah and the European editorial department of the Turkish broadcaster ATV in Frankfurt.

Commitment to the representation of minorities in the media

He has published articles on ethnic issues, xenophobia and extremist movements of Turkish origin in Germany. [3]
He specialised in the fate of Turkish Jews in the German-occupied countries of Europe during the National Socialist era, as well as biographical contributions and articles on foreign legionnaires under the Hitler dictatorship.[4]

One of the most important interviews in this area was with Karekin Bekdjian, the bishop of the Armenians in Germany. One of the important topics discussed in this interview was the fact that the Armenian Patriarch of Germany, Karekin Bekciyan, had for the first time hinted at the existence of 500 thousand Muslims in Turkey who still speak Armenian.[5][6]

Ahmet Özay was appointed as European advisor to the former Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Chairman Mustafa Dzhemilev in 1999. Since 2005, he has intensified his media work on the Crimean Tatars in exile. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Congress of Crimean Tatars[7] [8][9][10][11] and Germany Representatives of the Crimean Tatar People's Medjlis since 2009.[12][13] [14]
