Aeon Gods is a German symphonic power metal band formed in 2022.[1] The band is based in Lübeck, Schleswig-Holstein.[1] The central theme of their lyrics is mythology, especially Babylonian and Sumerian mythology. They define themselves as "messengers of the Gods", whose aim is to spread ancient stories in the modern world through the power of metal.[2]

History

Aeon Gods was formed in 2022. The band was specifically born from the "ashes " of the metal group Aeternitas that disbanded in 2022.[3] Aeternitas' "brain trust" Anja and Alex Hunzinger started Aeon Gods, seeking a "new concept" and a "different musical home".[4] Giving up his role as guitarist in Aeternitas, Alex Hunzinger concentrates exclusively on vocals in Aeon Gods.[3] The connection to Aeternitas is key, as it provides context to the founding members' level of experience and explains why they were able to develop a new project relatively quickly. The change in Alex Hunzinger's role is a significant detail for their sound.

Alex Hunzinger said in an interview about the transition, "After Aeternitas ended, we took a short break to take a deep breath and refocus. But it soon became clear that we couldn't live without music... we felt the call of the ancient gods, which eventually led us to this new path".[5] The formation of Aeon Gods is therefore not just the start of a new band from scratch, but the evolution of experienced musicians.

The debut single, "The Beginning", was released independently on 17 May 2023.2 This song "explores the beginning of the Babylonian 'Epic of Creation', 'Enuma elis'".[6] A second, independent single, "Ereshkigal", was released on 2 February 2024,[1] also independently. After that, Aeon Gods signed a deal with Scarlet Records, a partnership announced in conjunction with their debut album, scheduled for autumn 2024. The debut album, "King of Gods", was officially released on 22 November 2024 on Scarlet Records.[7]

The fast-track contract led them to the involvement of respected industry professionals in the production and cover design. Scarlet Records is a well-established label specialising in similar genres [8], with Sebastian "Seeb" Levermann producing and Péter Sallai doing the cover art.[1]

The band announced their alliance with the Wacken Foundation[9] on 7 April 2025, signalling support and recognition within the German metal scene. Aeon Gods joined Imperial Age's European tour called Return of the Atlanteans Tour 2025 , providing them with significant live performance opportunities. Tour dates ran from April to May 2025, covering the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, the UK and France.[10]

Lyrical and musical style

Aeon Gods is a symphonic power metal band.[1] Their music is described as "an imperial blend of powerful and catchy choruses, powerful beats and majestic soundscapes".[3] They combine "elements of classic power metal with various other influences such as melodic metal, heavy metal and symphonic metal".[3] Their sound is "cinematic ", "epic, soaring power metal"[4]. Reviews describe them as "hard, fast power metal" with "epic choruses " and "tight and thunderous" guitar riffs backed by "ample doubling foot drums".[8] Large orchestral instrumentation is present in their music, but is sometimes not "overly pronounced", the focus being more on the guitars.[8]

The band's central concept is that they see themselves as "narrators of a musical saga", leading listeners "into the world of ancient myths and gods".[5] Their debut album, King of Gods, is "entirely dedicated to the myths of the Babylonians and Sumerians ", aiming to interpret the legends "as authentically as possible" within an artistic context, based on research into ancient texts and symbolism.[5]

The elaborate stage names and conceptual roles ("Voice of the Gods", etc.) adopted by all members reinforce the thematic identity of the band and create a united front, involving both the band and the audience more deeply in their mythological world. Alex Hunzinger stated in an interview that "we do not portray ourselves as gods, but as messengers of the gods... Our stage names (or rather our messenger names) and visual concept reflect this role".[5] The band uses costumes as part of their visual identity (the video "Ereshkigal" mentions "Silvia Boucké's costumes").
