Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editor that can be used on both Windows and macOS and was created and sold by Adobe Inc. Thomas and John Knoll were the ones who first came up with the idea back in 1987. Since that time, the programme has established itself as the industry standard for professional digital art, particularly for the editing of raster images. The name of the programme is often used in everyday speech as a verb (for example, "to photoshop a picture," "photoshopping," and "photoshop contest"), despite Adobe's best efforts to dissuade this use.

In addition to allowing for the editing and composition of raster images over several layers, Photoshop also supports masks, alpha compositing, and a number of different colour models. In order to accommodate these capabilities, Photoshop makes use of its own file formats, known as PSD and PSB. In addition to raster graphics, Photoshop offers limited capabilities to edit or render text and vector graphics (particularly via the use of clipping path for the latter), in addition to 3D graphics and video. These capabilities are not available in Photoshop. It is possible to extend the capabilities of the programme by installing other software known as plug-ins.

The naming convention for Photoshop was originally derived from the software's version numbers. However, beginning in October 2002 (shortly after the launch of the Creative Suite branding), each subsequent version of Photoshop was given the designation "CS" followed by a number; for example, the eighth major version of Photoshop was named Photoshop CS, and the ninth version was named Photoshop CS2. Both the Standard and Extended versions of Photoshop CS3 through CS6 were made available to customers. Photoshop's licencing strategy was modified to that of a software as a service subscription model in June 2013, when the Creative Cloud branding was first introduced (and, as a result, the "CS" suffix was changed to "CC"). In the past, Adobe Photoshop was sold with a number of add-on programmes already installed, including Adobe ImageReady, Adobe Fireworks, Adobe Bridge, Adobe Device Central, and Adobe Camera RAW.

In addition to Photoshop, Adobe is responsible for the development and publication of other image editing software such as Photoshop Elements, Photoshop Lightroom, Photoshop Express, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop Mix. As of the month of November 2019, Adobe has also launched the complete version of Photoshop for the iPad. While the feature set will initially be restricted, Adobe has plans to add additional functionality to Photoshop for iPad in the future. They are known as "The Adobe Photoshop Family" together in Adobe's marketing.
