Adjy is an American indie rock band, based in the Appalachia region of the Southeastern United States. They are signed to Triple Crown Records.
History
Adjy has maintained relative silence on most social media since their inception, and little is known about the founding circumstances of the band.[1] They quietly released Grammatology on Flesh and Bone Records in 2014. The following summer they accompanied Annabel (band) as direct support for The Appleseed Cast during a national tour celebrating the 15th anniversary of that band's album Mare Vitalis. [2][3] They signed to Triple Crown Records in March of 2016, coinciding with the release of their second EP Prelude (.3333), and a national tour supporting labelmates Foxing (band).[4][5] After a long silence, they released two singles--In Medias Res and the double A-side A Boy Called June--on summer solstice June 21, 2019. Press outlets included a quote from songwriter Christopher Noyes, stating that the songs signaled the "[inauguration of] a chapter in something much, much larger." [6][7]
Musical style and lyrics
Noyes' songwriting dwells on the themes of memory, identity, communication, the nature of storytelling, and hope.[8] For example, "Grammatology" from Prelude (.3333) is centered around themes present in the Of Grammatology|eponymous text by Derrida, and uses the breakdown of language to explore a breakdown of intimacy and a loss of identity. The text of "Praepositio" makes extended reference to the process of myth-making and storycraft as a method of attempting to understand events and moments in the narrator's past (including an allusion to the Tolkien poem, Mythopoeia (poem)|Mythopoeia, in which the narrator argues that myths are in fact true).[9]
Noyes' has unambiguously stated his "deep longing for connection", admiring the artists who influenced him for "meaningfully leaving breadcrumbs...nudging me when I uncover one of their secrets." He called his writing and composition an attempt to "supersaturate [the songs] with as much intent as I can muster."[10]
