Aditi Bussells is an American epidemiologist and politician[1]. In 2021, Aditi was elected as the councilwoman at-large for the City of Columbia, South Carolina earning the most votes out of any candidate in that election cycle[2] and making history as the first South Asian woman elected to local office in Columbia, SC.[2] Born to immigrant parents from India, Aditi graduated from the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health with her PhD in Health Promotion in 2019. She received her undergraduate degree from University of Virginia in 2011.[3]
Political career
Aditi Bussells defeated Tyler Bailey in a runoff election, 54-46%, or 1,495 total votes for the open seat vacated by Tameika Devine, who was running for mayor.[4] Prior to the runoff, Aditi received the most votes out of 7 candidates, but did not receive the required 50% which resulted in a runoff. City council seats are non-partisan. Aditi is seen as an independent voice or "wild card" with backing from both prominent Democrats and Republicans during her election.[2] The South Carolina Democratic Party officially congratulated her when she won. In 2022, Aditi was voted 'Best Local Politician' by readers of the Post and Courier Free Times. [5]
