Adeline Michèle Pétricien, known professionally as Adi Oasis, previously as Adeline, is a French-Caribbean (now based in Brooklyn, NY) singer, bassist and producer that fuses soul, funk and R&B to form her own distinctive, retro-futurist sound.[1]

After several years performing in other people’s bands, Oasis went solo in 2018, releasing two albums and two EPs. She has also collaborated with Masego, Blue Lab Beats, Chet Faker, the Shapeshifters, Pastel, Jean Tonique, Jamila Woods, KIRBY, Aaron Taylor, and Leven Kali.

Along the way, she has received praise from media outlets such as Vogue[2], Rolling Stone[3], Wonderland,[4] Line of Best Fit.[5]

Early life

Oasis was born on May 17, 1985, in Saint-Mandé, Île-de-France, and grew up in a suburb of Paris, France. She is a blend of Caribbean and Southern French heritage and describes herself as a "clash of cultures". Her father is originally from Martinique and her mother from the southwest countryside. She and her three siblings grew up singing. At age 5 she began performing professionally with a choir and appeared on TV many times, toured across France growing up.

As a teenager she taught herself guitar and started writing her own songs while performing around Paris. After one year in college, she decided to dedicate her life to her musical career and moved to New York City, U.S.[6] on her own.

Career

Career beginnings

During her first year in New York while working as a model and model in New York, she formed her first group, called The Crowd, a trio with musicians Randy Mason and Akil Dasan. She picked up the bass when the band’s bass player canceled the night before a performance, and it soon became her signature instrument.[6]

After The Crowd, Oasis became the lead singer of Escort, a New York based nu-disco band. The band gained critical acclaim through several singles, including musical that she co-wrote with the band. Oasis decided to leave Escort in 2016 to embark on a solo career, and released her first solo album, "Adeline", on November 9, 2018.[7]

Oasis spent most of 2020 and 2021 in the recording studio making new music, when the COVID pandemic temporarily eliminated most other professional activities for musicians (such as touring). She released her first EP, “Interimes” on July 10, 2020, followed by a remix of that EP, entitled "Intérimixed", on September 11, 2020.[8]

On September 4, 2020, Atlantic Records artist KAMUU released the single “Mango (featuring Adi Oasis)”, which Oasis produced in partnership with Morgan Wiley. The video for the song garnered wide attention on YouTube, wracking up over 10 million views in the first year.[9]

In January 2021 Oasis released the single “Whisper My Name” following her debut performance of the song on a COLORS SESSION. The song became her first single from the 7-song EP “Adi Oasis”, which was released in September 2021.[10]

Transition from Adeline to Adi Oasis

On April 15,2021, Oasis changed her stage name from Adeline to Adi Oasis, posting “TODAY I OFFICIALLY BECOME ADI OASIS” on her Instagram account, along with a new photo by photographer Kendall Bessent.[11]

Etymologically: Adi is a nickname of Adeline and “music is my oasis, the stage is my oasis, the studio is my oasis".[12] She describes this change as essential to expressing herself as a solo artist.[13]

Influences

Her influences are Prince, Chaka Khan, Curtis Mayfield, Parliament-Funkadelic, Aretha Franklin, Earth Wind & Fire, Linda Clifford, Minnie Riperton, D’Angelo, and many more.[14]

Lotus Glow

Lotus Glow is the second studio album by artist Adi Oasis, released in 2023. The album represents a significant milestone in her career, marking a personal and artistic transformation. Adi Oasis considers it her most personal work to date, reflecting her growth and evolution both musically and personally.[15]

Background

Lotus Glow is Oasis's first release under her new stage name, symbolizing a rebirth and a fresh start in her artistic journey. The album signifies a departure from her previous work and showcases her emergence as the artist she has always aspired to be. Adi Oasis underwent profound changes and experiences, which she views as integral to her artistic development.[16]

Themes and Concept

The album is a narrative of Oasis's journey and serves as a reflection of her identity and experiences. The lotus flower serves as a powerful metaphor throughout the album, representing her transformation and growth. Adi Oasis draws parallels between herself and the lotus, emphasizing the significance of her roots and the importance of embracing one's origins. She believes that just as a lotus emerges from the mud, her own personal and cultural background has shaped her into who she is today.[17]

Social and Political Commentary

Oasis's truth often intersects with political themes, as she confronts issues related to her identity and background. As a woman of color with mixed heritage and an immigrant background, she highlights the challenges she has faced in pursuing her dreams and the systemic barriers that exist. Oasis uses her platform to shed light on these issues and aims to inspire others in similar situations. Several songs on the album, such as "Red To Violet," "Serena," and "Marigold," can be seen as anthems for Black women, while others, like "Sidonie" and "The Water," pay homage to her family and cultural heritage.[18]

Musical Style and Production

Lotus Glow showcases Oasis's musical growth and her pursuit of creating the sound she envisions. The album incorporates a more organic and raw musical approach, with the majority of the songs featuring live instruments. Oasis's collaboration with musicians and extensive experience performing live shows has influenced the album's sound, resulting in a funky, unpolished, and vibrant musical style. This evolution represents her confidence in trusting her instincts and realizing her musical vision.[19]
