Adejuwon Soyinka is a Nigerian journalist and Editor. In 2019, he was nominated for an International Emmy Award in the International Emmy Awards Current Affairs & News category, for his undercover role in Sweet Sweet Codeine [1] [2] an investigative news documentary that exposed the criminal gang behind the illegal distribution of addictive codeine among young Nigerians.

Career and Life

In 2017, he was appointed as an Editor for BBC News Pidgin service. Prior to that, Soyinka was Senior Special Assistant (Media) and Spokesman to the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, between October 2015 and May 2017[3] . He was also the Deputy General Editor for Tell Magazine an independent, investigative journalism publication. Mr Soyinka lives in Lagos with his wife and three children.

BBC News Pidgin

As pioneer Editor of the BBC News Pidgin service, Soyinka led a team of young journalists spread across West and Central Africa. Many of the stories created by Soyinka and his team have been picked up by other international organizations [4] such as The Sun, The Independent, The New York Times and The Washington Post as well as other local publications in Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon one of which was the Emmy nominated Sweet Sweet Codeine.

Within its first year of operation, the digital language service recorded a weekly audience base of 7.5 million [5] as opposed to the 500,000 audience target set for it by the BBC World Service. Soyinka's team was also able to get a number of influential interviews, having the likes of Microsoft Founder, Bill Gates[6]; British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright[7]; former President Olusegun Obasanjo[8] [9]; Africa's richest man, Aliko Dangote[10] and the current Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo[11], among others, speak Pidgin during their interview sessions.
