Adam Steen is an American businessman and government administrator who served as Director of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS). He has also been involved in business ventures and Republican political activity in Iowa.[1]

Early life and career

Steen grew up in Indianola, Iowa. He attended college on a baseball scholarship and later pursued a professional baseball career.

Steen was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies organization in 2002 and played professional baseball before ending his athletic career.

Government service

Steen was appointed Director of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services[2] in January 2021[3], during the administration of Governor Kim Reynolds. He served for approximately five years and was confirmed twice by the Iowa Senate, including an unanimous vote.[1][4][5]

Political activity & Gubernatorial Race

Steen has been involved in Republican political activity in Iowa and has publicly discussed fiscal conservatism and property rights. Steen is a Republican candidate for Governor of Iowa in the 2026 election with his campaign officially launching in August 2025.[6][7][8][9]

Steen participated in a primary debate against other Republican primary candidates on January 27, 2026.[10]

On February 2, 2026, the Republican Party of Iowa hosted their annual straw poll in counties across the state that occurs alongside the Iowa Democratic Caucuses. Voters turned out to cast their silent ballot for their preferred GOP gubernatorial candidate. Steen finished the night as the frontrunner with roughly 40% of the vote.[11] These results fueled speculation of a potential contested Iowa GOP convention in June 2026 to determine the primary winner who will go on to represent the GOP in the general election.[12]

Personal life

Steen is married and has two children.[13]
