Adam Hughes (born May 8, 1986) [1] is an American volleyball coach at the University of Maryland (2018–present).
Personal life
Hughes was born in State College, Pennsylvania, and received his degree in Economics in 2006 from Penn State. He is married to Alice Kahrs Hughes. Adam and Alice have three kids, Harper, Hayden and Henley.[1]
Playing career
Hughes served as a practice player and manager for the women's volleyball team at Penn State University from 2002 to 2006. [1]
Coaching career
Hughes served as a volunteer assistant and manager for Penn State women's volleyball from 2003-08. During that time, he assisted in team training, worked with Data Volleyball and DigVid, supported recruiting efforts and served as gym coordinator for four courts during the Penn State individual and team summer camps.
Upon graduation, Hughes was an assistant coach with the State College Area High School boys varsity volleyball team and the head coach of the junior varsity squad. Following this, Hughes was named the volunteer assistant coach for the women's volleyball team at UC Irvine in 2008-09.
He returned to Penn State in 2010 as the Director of Volleyball Operations. During this time period, he won two National Championships. During his nine seasons at Penn State, Hughes helped the Nittany Lions capture three NCAA National Championships and eight Big Ten Conference championships.
Hughes left to coach at Maryland in 2014. In 2015, Hughes was named a recipient of the prestigious 'Thirty Under 30' award by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, which honors the top-30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches under the age of 30.
In February of 2017, Hughes was promoted to associate head coach.
On January 23rd, 2018, Hughes was named the fifth head coach in Maryland Volleyball history. He replaced Steve Aird, who left to take the same position at Indiana.
