Acorn Publishing LLC is a highly selective hybrid publishing imprint that formed an original publishing model that combines elements of traditional publishing and self-publishing. It was founded in Irvine, California in 2015 by best friends, Jessica Therrien and Holly Kammier.

History

Holly Kammier, a former journalist with a background in publicity, became disillusioned early in her publication journey when a traditional publisher expressed interest in her memoir, but only if she changed it. Meanwhile, Jessica Therrien had seen great success with Oppression[1], the first book in her young adult series, Children of the Gods. But when her publisher mislabeled the second book as a romance novel instead of young adult fantasy, fans couldn’t find it.[2]
So, the best friends teamed up and started an imprint to publish their own books.[3] Ultimately, it was Kammier’s son who coined the name Acorn Publishing, and the women developed the motto "from the tiny acorn grows the mighty oak."[4]
Acorn Publishing’s first releases were Kammier’s 2015 novel Kingston Court[5] and all three of Therrien’s Children of the Gods novels.
They realized, if they could create success for themselves, they might be able to do the same for others. Thus, they took on a couple more authors. Soon after, Alyssa Petersel’s award-winning memoir, Somehow I Am Different was named Indie Book of the Year by Kirkus Reviews[6].
Therrien and Kammier’s mission became to take advantage of the increasing gap between the world of traditional publishing and the wild frontier of self-publishing[7].
Seven years later, they have acquired over one hundred books under their imprint and an accomplished staff of industry experts.[8]
