Achal Mishra is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and editor, who is known for his work in independent cinema. He gained critical recognition for his debut feature film Gamak Ghar (2019), which was widely praised for its visual storytelling and portrayal of rural life in Bihar.

Early life and education

Mishra was born in Darbhanga, Bihar. He developed an interest in cinema during his school years and later pursued undergraduate studies at Ashoka University.[1]

Career

Film

Mishra made his directorial debut with the Maithili-language film Gamak Ghar in 2019. The film, set in a family home over multiple decades, was noted for its minimalist style and emotional depth. It premiered at the 21st MAMI Mumbai Film Festival and was later screened at other film festivals[2]

Critics praised Mishra's use of imagery and naturalistic pacing. The film drew comparisons to the works of directors like Hirokazu Kore-eda and Edward Yang for its restrained tone and personal storytelling.[3]

Mishra also directed the short film The Resident (2021), and is known for editing his own work. His subsequent projects have continued to explore themes of memory, place, and identity.[4]

Style and influences

Mishra's filmmaking has been described as contemplative and grounded in realism. He has cited influences from world cinema and Indian parallel cinema traditions. His visual style often involves the use of fixed-frame compositions and natural light.[5]
