Abu Taher Chowdhury (1945 – November 20, 2024) was a Bangladeshi politician, social worker and an organizer during the Bangladesh Liberation War. He was a prominent leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Cox’s Bazar District. Abu Taher Chowdhury served for a long time as President of the Chakaria Upazila BNP, President of the Chakaria Municipality BNP, Acting President of the Cox’s Bazar District BNP and a member of the party’s Advisory Committee (Cox's Bazar District).[1]
Early life
Abu Taher Chowdhury was born in 1945 in the Zamindarpara area of greater Chakaria Upazila in Cox’s Bazar District. His father, Alhaj Ahmad Kabir, was a local landlord and a well-known timber businessman, and his mother was Chaman Khatun. The family belonged to an influential Zamindar (landlord) lineage of the region. In his early life, Chowdhury became involved in business, community and social service.[citation needed]
Role during the Liberation War
During the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, Chowdhury actively organized local freedom fighters and supported pro-independence activities. He was arrested by the Pakistani military in early 1971 due to his organizational role and was subjected to torture for his support of the liberation movement. After independence, he joined local political activities in Chakaria.[citation needed]
Political career
Following the independence of Bangladesh, Chowdhury joined the newly formed Bangladesh Nationalist Party under the leadership of President Ziaur Rahman in 1979. He was one of the founding organizers of the BNP in Chakaria. From 1981, he served continuously for 17 years as the President of the Chakaria Upazila BNP. He also chaired the “Village Government Formation Committee” in the Chittagong Division.[citation needed]
During the leadership of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Chowdhury proposed that Chakaria be declared a sub-municipality which was later approved. He was the founding president of the Chakaria Municipality BNP and also served as Acting President and Advisory Committee Member of the Cox’s Bazar District BNP.[citation needed]
Death
Abu Taher Chowdhury passed away on November 20, 2024, in Chakaria. His death was deeply mourned by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed, and Chittagong Divisional Organizational Secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim. In a party statement, he was described as a dedicated and selfless leader.[citation needed]
Legacy
Abu Miah's family remains well-known in Chakaria for their historical Zamindar background and contribution to local development. His father, Alhaj Ahmad Kabir, was both a respected landlord and an influential timber trader in the region.[citation needed]
